"My song Drew “Alison” Carey and entire EP revolves around the idea of depression, addiction, and recovery. Depression & addiction can be an incredibly powerful and controlling force in our lives if we are susceptible to their influence. Personally, I’ve struggled with both for many years. I wrote most of these songs while I was stuck in a inpatient rehabilitation hospital for one month after being struck by a car. I broke my leg in two places and had to learn how to walk again. Prior to the accident I was already incredibly depressed and the situation was exacerbated by my accident and injuries. I felt as if I had truly hit rock bottom. I had only recently broken my ankle during a skateboard commute home from work; I had gotten in trouble with law enforcement for using cannabis one month later- life just was becoming increasingly difficult. Sitting in the hospital I was left to my own devices. I’d contemplated how and why I was in my current position. As always, I turned to music for solace and some sense of purpose. These songs helped to give me reason to believe that things will get better. They allowed me to recognize that the immense rut I was stuck in will eventually return to an equilibrium. This music helped to remind me that there are peaks and valleys in the landscape of our lives. This music serves as my zen- my homeostasis in the tumultuous nature of life."
